Pearl's broken toe

Our string of visits to the vet continues. Pearl broke her toe Monday.

She was outside playing with Maggie, and when they came in, Pearl was limping. I was initially worried that she'd hurt her hip, but it didn't seem painful when I checked her out. As the day went on, she limped more and more.

We took her to the vet, and it became obvious that her toe was the problem. We decided to get x-rays taken, since it was obvious that something was really wrong. Sure enough, there's a little crack in the third toe of her back right foot.

She's got a splint which looks like a big purple shoe. When she walks, she sounds like she's got a peg-leg. thump, thump, thump

Here's a picture of the patient. Note that the dog beds are together; Maggie wanted to sleep next to her that first night.

She'll get the splint changed after two weeks, then keep the new one for another two weeks. In the meantime, she's on pain medication and a mild sedative to help her rest. We feel bad that she has to be drugged up, but it's going to help her stay off the foot, which will help it heal.

We are seriously considering dog health insurance. I think we're good parents to these dogs, but they just can't seem to go a full month without something happening.
