We have little visitors in our attic.
This has been a problem off and on, and at the moment, it's on. Our house has a place where two sections of roof overlap, and these guys have figured out that soffit is not really much of an obstacle. I think it's a design flaw; in this two foot section where the roof sections meet at a 90 degree angle, there's no solid material closing off the attic. The soffit doesn't go all the way to the back, leaving a small hole.
It's hard to explain, and even harder to get to on a ladder. I have a 20' extension ladder, and with it all the way out, I can barely reach the area in question. It's hard to do much work there.
I like squirrels just fine. I enjoy their amusing antics. (Pearl is the one with a squirrel obsession.) I prefer them outside, that's all.
As before, I'm being humane about how we make them leave. I go in the attic with a flashlight, attempt to scare them out, then try to block the hole.
This time, I tried a remedy from the inside. Unfortunately, since the roof is slanting down to the hole, there's no room to get all the way there, especially considering the roofing nails that spike out under the roof. These are handy for jabbing holes in your head. Kneeling on two 1 1/2 inch boards doesn't help things.
Despite this, I managed to close off most of the hole by laying face down in insulation and shoving a board as far as I could to the edge of the roof. While doing this, a little critter kept sticking his head in, even though I was only three feet away. I could tell he wasn't happy, and was glad he didn't decide to defend his claim.
This weekend, I'll rig up a more permanent version of the "board shoved in up the hole" approach. Hopefully this will last longer than my previous attempts to live squirrel-free.
My main fear is that there were other squirrels in the attic while I was up there yesterday, and they're now sealed in. By Saturday, I hope the outside squirrels will have given up on coming in, and the inside squirrels will really want to leave.
Pearl says she could help with that if I'd give her a boost up the attic door.
