Geocaching - GC1C3 - "Super Bowl Stash"
We must like it; we did it again!
This stash was a lot harder to find...
We got to Castlewood State Park at around 4:30. Only 90 minutes to find the stash before dark. That made it a little more exciting, I think.
One of the tricky parts of geocaching is knowing how to physically get to the logical point indicated by your GPS. All you know is that it's "0.38 miles thatta way," but unless you think you're a Humvee, it's probably worth taking some time to find the best method of getting to that point.
We got a map from the park office and compared it to our map of the approximate location of the stash from MapBlast. We picked the trailhead to use, parked nearby, and set out.
Maggie is very ... energetic when on a leash, but that's not bad when you're hiking up a hill. I found out, however, that it can be pretty dangerous when hiking down a hill, so it's clear to me that Miss Magnolia needs to have some follow-up leash walking lessons.
We closed in on the coordinates, and found that the stash was located off the trail, about 40' from the top of a high hill. Despite our thoughts of losing our footing on the leaves and underbrush, then sliding 200' to the bottom of the hill, we managed to isolate the best search area for the stash.
I thought, "There's no way I'm sticking my hand in that dead tree to find any dumb box of stuff." Julie agreed. So we kept looking.
I won't spoil the surprise for those who want to try to find it, but it's definitely a good one.
We didn't really see anything we wanted in the stash, so we just took a couple of pictures of Maggie and me, and Julie signed the book.
And happily, we made it back down the hill to the car before dark.
We stopped by Krispy Kreme on the way home to celebrate a successful outing.
